The Joint Military Task Force (JTF) Operation Pulo Shield, has recorded a major victory in the fight against pipeline vandalisation and destruction of oil facilities with the arrest of a notorious militant, Seiyefa Gbereke  a.k.a General Cairo.

25 year-old Cairo from Bolo Orua in Sagbama Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, was said to have taken over Mammy Water’ gang when he was killed by JTF following the death of  five JTF men .

JTF Intelligence sources who have been on the trail of General Cairo said he has been responsible for the various bombing of oil facilities in Bayelsa axis and criminal activities along the water ways. An impeccable source, who witnessed his arrest said he was tricked to come to Yenagoa from his base in Warri. According to the source, unknown to him his cover has been blown open that he was the wanted General Cairo.

However when he got to Agudama, close to the law school, he decided to change his mind of meeting with JTF and attempted to escape. Eye-witness account said the officer who led the JTF team followed him in hot pursuit and jumped into the swamp to escape.

The media coordinator of the JTF, Lt. Col Onyema Nwachukwu while parading General Cairo at the JTF headquarters said after his arrest, JTF Commander, Major- General Johnson Ochoga and Intelligence unit interrogated him.

Nwachukwu stated that General Ciaro had made useful statement to the JTF on his nefarious activities, which have threatened the security of the region. He said: “You are not unaware that General Ciaro has been the kingpin of a notorious gang that has been perpetrating dangerous activities, destruction of pipelines, oil well heads in the Niger Delta region. We have been on his trail tracking him for the past five months.

“On Thursday he was arrested by our operatives and brought to the JTF headquarters. He was interrogated by the JTF commander and the Intelligence operative of the JTF. He has made useful statement regarding his nefarious activities. He has confessed to us, willingly, voluntarily that he led a group of eight men to destroy Agip manifold flow station at Azagebne, and at Biseni close to Taylor Creek.

In an interview General Cairo, who admitted confessing to JTF, said he decided to engage in blowing up of oil facilities because the federal government refused to recognise some of them who submitted arms after the first and second phase of the amnesty programme. He revealed that he manufactures all the bombs they used in blowing up the oil facilities, adding that he learnt how to manufacture bombs during the militancy period.

“I have made some confessions to the JTF about all the oil facilities we destroyed. After the first and second phase amnesty, we submitted 25,000 weapons since 2011 and we have not been accommodated in the amnesty programme. So we decided to organise ourselves and blow up some pipelines.

“We did not participate in the first amnesty process because we were afraid. But after the first and second phase, the government encouraged us to submit our guns and we did. We have had peaceful protests at the East- West road, Lokoja road even we petitioned the coordinator of the amnesty process, Mr. Kingsley Kuku but nobody listened to us” JTF sources said they are following the trail of his gang and would soon catch up with all of them.

Mali's Islamists destroy Timbuktu religious treasures

Hardline Islamists occupying northern Mali went on the rampage in Timbuktu on Saturday, destroying...

Hardline Islamists occupying northern Mali went on the rampage in Timbuktu on Saturday, destroying ancient tombs of Muslim saints and threatening to wipe out every religious shrine in the fabled city.
The onslaught by armed militants from the fundamentalist Ansar Dine group was launched just two days after UNESCO named the city an endangered world heritage site because of the unrest in the vast desert north of Mali.

"They have raped Timbuktu today. It is a crime," said a source close to a local imam in the town known as the "City of 333 Saints".

Witnesses said the Islamists had destroyed the ancient tomb of one revered Muslim figure after encircling a cemetery in the north of the Timbuktu, and were on the attack against another in the east.

"This is tragic news for us all," Alissandra Cummins, chair of UNESCO's executive committee, said in a statement to AFP in Russia, where the body is meeting this week, describing the attacks as "wanton damage".

"I appeal to all those engaged in the conflict in Timbuktu to exercise their responsibility."
Ansar Dine, one of the hardline Islamist groups which seized control of the vast desert north of Mali in the chaotic aftermath of a March coup in Bamako, said no site would be safe in Timbuktu.

"Ansar Dine will today destroy every mausoleum in the city. All of them, without exception," spokesman Sanda Ould Boumama told AFP through an interpreter from the city.
The Ansar Dine spokesman suggested Saturday's action was in retaliation for the UNESCO decision to put the World Heritage site, a cradle of Islamic learning founded in the fifth century, on its endangered list on Thursday

"God is unique. All of this is haram (or forbidden in Islam). We are all Muslims. UNESCO is what?" he said, declaring that Ansar Dine -- which wants to impose sharia law in the region -- was acting "in the name of God."

Witnesses in Timbuktu said the gangs had destroyed the mausoleum of a saint whose 15th century tomb was already desecrated in May by members of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Magreb, another of the groups in control in the north.

"As I am speaking to you, Islamists from Ansar Dine have destroyed the mausoleum of saint Sidi Mahmoud," one witness told AFP.

"They are now in the process of destroying the mausoleum (of Sidi Moctar)," added a local journalist. "They have said they will destroy everything."

UNESCO said its decision to place both the town and the nearby Tomb of Askia in Gao on its List of World Heritage in Danger "aims to raise cooperation and support for the sites threatened by the armed conflict in the region."

Mali has been gripped by chaos since disgruntled troops swarmed the capital Bamako in the south in March and ousted the elected president of what had been seen as one of Africa's model democracies.

Islamic and tribal Tuareg groups seized on the power vacuum push government forces out of northern Mali, an area the size of France and Belgium, including Timbuktu and the cities of Gao and Kidal.

Mali's neighbours in west Africa have held several crisis meetings on the situation.
But on Friday, another Islamist militant group in the lawless north, the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO), threatened any countries which join a military intervention force to end the crisis.

UNESCO, the world's main watchdog over the safety of some of history's greatest treasures and most threatened cultural exhibits, first designated Timbuktu a heritage site in 1988.

As well as three historic mosques, Timbuktu has 16 cemeteries and mausolea, according to the UNESCO website.

It is also home to nearly 100,000 ancient manuscripts, some dating back to the 12th century, preserved in family homes and private libraries under the care of religious scholars.

At its height in the 1500s, the city, a Niger River port at the edge of the Sahara 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) north of Bamako, was the key intersection for salt traders travelling from the north and gold traders from the south.

Saudis Forces Mass On Jordanian, Iraqi Borders, While Turkey, Syria Reinforce Strength

The Syrian crisis was Friday, June 29, on a knife edge between a Western-Arab-Turkish military offensive in the next 48 hours and a big power accord to ward it off.

debkafile’s military sources report heavy Saudi troop movements toward the Jordanian and Iraqi borders Thursday overnight and up until Friday morning, June 29, after King Abdullah put the Saudi military on high alert for joining an anti-Assad offensive in Syria.

The Saudi units are poised with tanks, missiles, special forces and anti-air batteries to enter Jordan in two heads:
One will safeguard Jordan's King Abdullah against potential Syrian or Iranian reprisals from Syria or Iraq.

The second will cut north through Jordan to enter southeastern Syriam, where a security zone will be established around the towns of Deraa, Deir al-Zour and Abu Kemal – all centers of the anti-Assad rebellion. The region is also the home terrain of the Shammar tribe, brethren of the Shammars of the Saudi Nejd province.

The Saudi units deployed on the Iraqi border are there to defend the kingdom against potential incursions by Iraqi Shiite militias crossing into the kingdom for reprisals. The Iraqi militias are well trained and armed and serve under officers of the Iranian Al-Qods Brigades, the Revolutionary Guards’ external arm.

Western Gulf sources report that Jordan too is on war alert.
Following the downing of a Turkish plane by Syria a week ago, Turkey continues to build up its Syrian border units with anti-aircraft guns, tanks and missiles towed by long convoys of trucks.

A Free Syria Army officer, Gen. Mustafa al-Sheikh, reported Friday that 170 Syrian army tanks of the 17th Mechanized Division were massed near the village of Musalmieh northeast of Aleppo, 30 km from the Turkish border. He said they stood ready to attack any Turkish forces crossing into Syria.

As these war preparations advanced, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in St. Petersburg Friday for crucial talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. They meet the day before the new UN-sponsored Action Group convenes in Geneva to discuss UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan’s latest transition proposal for Syria. He hopes for a political settlement that will ward off military intervention.

Invited to the meeting are the five veto-wielding UN Security Council members plus Turkey and Arab League envoys from Qatar, Kuwait and Iraq.

Annan proposes forming a transitional national unity government in Damascus that includes the opposition and excludes unacceptable regime members.

It was widely reported Thursday that Russia had agreed to this formula, even though it entailed evicting Bashar Assad from power. However, Lavrov stepped in to correct the record, stressing in reference to the Annan proposal that Moscow would not lend its support to “any outside interference or imposition of recipes in Syria.”

This position is doubly aimed at the intensive military movements afoot around Syria.

Clinton and Lavrov are therefore expected to go at the Syrian issue hammer and tongs. The outcome of their meeting will not only determine the course of the Action Group’s discussions but, more importantly, whether the Western-Arab-Turkish alliance goes forward with its military operation against Syria.

US-Russian concurrence on a plan for Assad’s removal could avert the operation. The failure of their talks would spell a worsening of the Syrian crisis and precipitate Western-Arab military intervention, which according to military sources in the Gulf is scheduled for launch Saturday, June 30.

Tonight Stretches By A Second - Experts

An agency report indicated on Friday that International timekeepers are adding a second to the clock at midnight universal time Saturday, June 30, going into July 1. That’s 8 p.m. EDT Saturday.

The report said the  universal time would be 11:59:59 and then the unusual reading of 11:59:60 before it hits midnight.

A combination of factors, including Earth slowing down a bit from the tidal pull of the moon, and an atomic clock that’s a hair too fast, means that periodically timekeepers have to synchronise the official atomic clocks, said Daniel Gambis, head of the Earth Orientation Service in Paris that coordinates leap seconds.
ond a year.

Timekeepers add that leap second every now and then to keep the sun at its highest at noon, at least during standard time.

The experts said it was the first leap second since January 2009 and the 25th overall.
Gambis said the next one probably would not be needed until 2015 or 2016.

There should be no noticeable affect or inconvenience on computers or any other technology that requires precise timekeeping because they adjust for these leap seconds, Gambis said Friday.

Earlier this year, official timekeepers from across the world discussed whether to eliminate the practice of adding leap seconds.

They decided they needed more time to think about the issue and will next debate the issue in 2015.
So for now, Chester said, “you get an extra second, don’t waste it.”

N15m scam : Jim Iyke speaks!!!

A week ago, Nollywood actor, Jim Iyke broke the news that the N15 million case filed against him has been thrown out of court for lack of evidence.

And just a day after, the plaintiff, Hajia Habiba Abubakar   fired back that the case was not thrown out of court due to  lack of evidence, rather, she withdrew it after the actor apologized to her, and signed an agreement to pay the money in installments until the full amount is realised. However, an online media claimed that Abubakar also made available documents backing her  claims.
Nollywood star, Jim Iyke

Speaking from far away Brazil where he is currently attending the Rio +20 gathering, Jim Iyke said “It was God’s intervention. I’m sure even she doesn’t  know how it ended like this.”

He said , “the fact that she’s still running around proves it. It was a conspiracy to bury me and take an undeserved equity of my company and I refused and hell broke loose.

“How can it be fraud when I admitted the amount invested? My lawyer advised me to take the deal and walk away when they had nothing else to say. It’s just part of my ventures.

“We settled out of court and I’m a gentleman and apologized for the angry words I spoke. When I’m home, I’m still gonna further hold a press conference and apologize to my family and true fans that saw me through that abyss. Well, this is all I can say for now.”

Meanwhile, reports had it that Jim Iyke and his parents paid a visit to Abubakar’s Abuja home where they pleaded with the woman to tamper justice with mercy. And after listening to Jim’s aging parents, Abubakar was said to have calmed down and made a decision to discontinue the case but not without some conditions.

According to reports,  some of the conditions the actor must fulfill before being let off the hook are that he, Jim Iyke, must tender a written public apology to Habiba Abubakar in at least two Nigerian daily papers. And that he, Jim Iyke, must also  pay back the N16.5m he collected from Abubakar but this time in installments.

Boko Haram: Investors beg Jonathan to speed action

Business men in the country have pleaded with the Federal Government  to fast-track the dialogue process with the Boko Haram sect in order to avert further destruction of lives and property as a result of the  frequent attacks by the sect.

The President,  Abeo-kuta Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mine and Agriculture ABEOCIMA, Alhaji Surajudeen Bada who made the plea on behalf of stakeholders yesterday in Abeokuta, noted that business can only thrive in a peaceful atmospphere.

Speaking on the cashless economy, the Chamber commended the Central Bank of Nigeria for the policy which according to it, was designed to curb cash dominance with its implication for cost of cash management to the banking industry, security  and money laundering.

The chamber however urged the C B N to ensure that all the loose ends are tightened to forestall undue manipulation by unscrupulous elements who may want to exploit the situasion to the detriment of the people.
While commending Ogun state government on its strides on urban renewal projects across the state, Bada said the development has given the state capital a befitting look.

Euro 2012 final : Balotelli will be a threat says Fabregas

KIEV(AFP) – Cesc Fabregas says that Spain will need to pay special attention to Mario Balotelli if they are to get the better of Italy in Sunday’s Euro 2012 final in Kiev.

Balotelli produced the finest performance of his blossoming international career on Thursday by claiming an excellent brace to give Italy a 2-1 win over Germany in their semi-final match in Warsaw.

The 21-year-old Manchester City striker now finds himself in contention to win the tournament’s Golden Boot and Fabregas says that his performance against Germany proved he is coming of age at international level.

“Balotelli is a great player,” the Barcelona midfielder said on Friday.

“He showed that yesterday by scoring two superb goals in a semi-final against a very strong team like Germany.

“He’ll be a threat, just like (Antonio) Cassano and the other strikers.”

Asked to assess Italy’s key strengths, Fabregas said that Cesare Prandelli’s side possessed dangerous players in every area of the pitch.

“They have a very competitive team,” he said.

“They are very experienced at the back and up front, and they have players who had excellent seasons for teams like AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus.

“Italy’s defenders are very experienced, and they know when to attack and when to defend.

“On top of that they have a goalkeeper (Gianluigi Buffon) who’s a natural leader, but Spain have a great goalkeeper as well in Iker Casillas.

“They also have a lot of variety up front. They have strong players like Balotelli, tricky players like Cassano, and in midfield they have special players like (Claudio) Marchisio and (Andrea) Pirlo, who’s had a great tournament.

“It will be a tough game and the winners will be deserving champions. I think we’ve been the two most consistent teams at the tournament.”

Victory for Spain on Sunday would make them the first team to successfully defend the European title and the first side to win three consecutive major international tournaments.

Having already played a starring role in the successes at Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup, Fabregas says he continues to draw inspiration from the dedication of the country’s supporters.

“The players are lucky to have a country behind us that loves football,” he said. “It’s a great pleasure for us to transmit joy to the fans who support us.

“The fans have been coming out onto the streets in Spain after our matches, and there are fans who have travelled to Ukraine despite all the logistical difficulties with transport.

“It’s fantastic to have the whole country behind us. We have great faith in the fans, and we hope the fans have faith in us.

“The aim of the players here is to continue to write history.”
A second-half substitute in the 2-0 quarter-final win over France, Fabregas will hope to be granted a starting berth in Sunday’s final at the Olympic Stadium.

FAROUK GATE: Jonathan Asks Nigerians To Be Patient

President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, implored Nigerians to exercise patience with the law enforcement agents as they investigate the House of Representatives Oil Subsidy report.

According to him, enough time is needed to establish water-tight cases against those who may have committed offences warranting being charged to court, and added that it was better to do a good job than to lose the cases in court due to shoddy preparations.

Speaking to Nigerian residents in Belgium after delivering a keynote address at the 119th/120th Sessions of the World Customs Organisation, (WCO),Jonathan said, “EFCC is working on the report, so we must give them the chance to do their job. We have to build water-tight cases if we hope to get any conviction for any wrongdoing, and the law demands proof.

“Take a look at the USA; after September 11, 2001, all Americans came together to support their government’s fight against terrorism, regardless of their political leaning”, he said, and noted that Nigerians should not play to the gallery or play politics with serious national issues”.

Asking Nigerians, including the media, not to run the country down, the president said, “We will continue to ensure our freedom of speech, but we should use it to build the country, not destroy it.”
